As a professor, I met dyslexic students that had been in college for years retaking classes and struggling needlessly to graduate all due to a lack of assistance they could have received prior to coming to college. But their parents failed to get the help they deserved.

We found out our son had dyslexia when he was in second grade. In the fifth grade, he was reading on a first-grade level. He was falling fast and emotionally drained. We had to take him out of public school for two years. So, I know a lot about:

• Increased stress and decreased self-esteem

• Late nights reading homework

• Tears worrying about the future.

• Spending tens of thousands of dollars on programs that did not deliver what was promised

But I learned a lot in our journey. As I learned to lean into my son’s dyslexia I expanded on the homeschool curriculum I developed when he was younger, focused on his style of learning, and laid the foundation for academic success.

I used those same systems when we placed him back in public school. Those systems positioned him for college, scholarships, and life success as well as creating a home with less stress. A home where everyone succeeds. Including ME.
